Through a semester-long internship with Meredith鈥檚 Marketing Department, Grace Landenberg, 鈥27, has gained translation experience directly related to her career goal. She plans to earn a master鈥檚 degree in translation and work in audio-visual and marketing translation.
During her internship, Landenberg translated approximately 12 posts from Meredith’s Admissions Blog from English to Spanish. The internship provided her with real-world translation experience, including working with clients to weigh translation choices.聽
Landenberg worked independently to begin the translations, then met with her supervisor, Rocio Antelis, to review her process and discuss translation options. As Meredith鈥檚 marketing communications specialist, Antelis manages the blog and also translates posts.聽
D茅bora Maldonado-DeOliveira, associate professor of Spanish, also supervised Landenberg, who earned credit hours through the internship.
Landenberg said she鈥檚 learned valuable skills from the experience.
鈥淚鈥檝e learned the importance of paying attention to detail, utilizing resources at hand, and feeling comfortable with asking for help,鈥 she said.
Landenberg also observed that the process had taught her that making mistakes provides valuable learning opportunities.
鈥淐riticism can be difficult to take, as it makes you feel like you don鈥檛 know as much as you thought, or that others doubt your abilities,鈥 she said. 鈥淎s a non-native Spanish speaker, I always get embarrassed when I make a mistake. However, I learned so much from asking questions and correcting mistakes.鈥
Antelis said the internship was also a learning opportunity.
鈥淔rom working with Grace, I have learned to think outside the box when translating. There are so many resources beyond a dictionary that can be helpful, like looking at documents, websites, and other materials originally written in Spanish,鈥 said Antelis.
