Becoming a Well-Prepared Teacher – Haley Ervin

Teaching Fellow Haley Ervin, 鈥18 has always had a love for math and a passion for teaching. So, at Meredith she pushed herself to become a well-prepared teacher for her future students.

Haley chose to attend Meredith because of its reputable education program. She is majoring in mathematics, while earning 6-9 and 9-12 licensure. After graduation, she hopes to return to her hometown in western North Carolina and become a high school math teacher.

鈥淎t Meredith, you don鈥檛 major in education,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou get your major in your content area, and I鈥檓 really glad it works that way. I鈥檝e always wanted to teach, but you never know what鈥檚 going to happen in life. So I love that I鈥檒l have my math major to fall back on, just in case.鈥

Haley is excited to show her students why she enjoys math so much. 鈥淚t really teaches you to problem solve and think critically. I want to teach kids that it鈥檚 more than just the numbers,鈥 Haley said.

Aside from developing her teaching skills, Haley has also been pushing herself on the softball field. She has been an outfielder on the Meredith softball team for four years and has earned numerous accolades.

Haley is a three-time member of the USA South All-Academic Team, has earned All-Conference and All-East honors, and was a 2016 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region selection. She also sits second all-time in stolen bases and leads Meredith with the highest season batting average and on-base percentage.

Off the softball field, she has studied abroad in Italy, been president of Meredith Educators, and is a member of Pi Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honor Society. She says being involved has helped her experience diversity and new friendships.

In Italy, Haley was part of a study abroad trip for educators where they visited a number of schools to learn about the education system in Italy. This was by far Haley鈥檚 favorite experience.

鈥淕oing there was like having a student in my class who鈥檚 from a different country and doesn鈥檛 speak the language,鈥 said Haley. 鈥淚 saw how hard it was to communicate with others, and that鈥檚 what English language learners experience in our classrooms. That was really eye-opening and gave me patience and more ideas to help them when they鈥檙e in my classroom.鈥

Haley admits that although she has enjoyed her experiences at Meredith, being away from home was a challenge at first 鈥 one that she鈥檚 had to overcome. However, through close friendships with her teammates, her softball team has helped her overcome that challenge.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the friends and the memories with them that make softball the best,鈥 she said. 鈥淢aking friends and having people I can count on has been like finding a home here at Meredith. You find your family here.鈥

As her graduation approaches, Haley is looking forward to her career as a teacher.

鈥淢eredith thinks of everything to prepare you for when you leave, especially through student teaching and all of your education and math classes,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 not afraid to start my job after I leave. I learned so much about teaching from Meredith so I feel confident. And if I ever don鈥檛 know what to do, I know I have a place to come back to and ask questions.鈥
